Product Scientist - AI & Microbiology

Product Scientist - AI & Microbiology

Location: Barcelona (Esplugues de Llobregat) | Employment Type: Full-Time

About Us

At KOA Biotech, we are a young and ambitious biotech startup with the mission of making aquaculture smarter, safer, and more sustainable. We develop innovative technology that combines biotechnology, IoT, and artificial intelligence to provide continuous pathogen monitoring directly on farms, helping producers make informed decisions and increase

productivity.

We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and innovators working side by side to turn complex challenges into real-world impact. We operate at the intersection of biology and technology, building the systems, software, and infrastructure that make science faster, smarter, and ready for the real world.

The Role

We are looking for a Product Scientist with a hybrid profile, able to bridge biology and engineering, leading the training and improvement of our AI algorithms for more precise and efficient microbiological identification.

This role combines lab work and computational analysis. The selected candidate will be responsible for guiding the training processes of our AI models, working closely with data scientists and the lab to generate and validate the data that feed the algorithms. This includes:

Laboratory: processing samples, culturing colonies, performing PCRs, and other basic assays to generate high-quality data.

Computational: evaluating AI results, identifying weak points, improving image annotation workflows, and validating models.

Integration: translating lab findings into inputs to improve AI models and ensuring algorithms accurately reflect underlying biology.

This is a strategic and hands-on role, combining product vision with active involvement in laboratory and data analysis tasks.

What You’ll Work On

• Design and lead the training cycle for AI algorithms for microorganism identification.

• Coordinate laboratory data generation to feed the models (colony picking, PCR, plate images, etc.).

• Work closely with data scientists to identify errors, improve annotations, augment, and validate datasets.

• Evaluate and document AI model performance, proposing improvements based on quantitative analysis and experimental observations.

• Prioritize and manage product-related tasks, balancing lab needs with computational requirements.

• Ensure traceability and quality of experimental and computational data.

• Propose new features or improvements to AI analysis tools, aligned with the company’s strategic objectives.

Who You Are

• Background in Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields + 3-5 years of experience.

• Laboratory experience: microbiological cultures, PCR, and basic molecular biology techniques.

• Knowledge of tools for annotation, augmentation, and validation of datasets for machine learning models.

• Analytical skills and experience in statistical analysis.

• Ability to translate biological needs into computational requirements and vice versa.

• Leadership and communication skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (lab, data science, product).

• Curiosity, proactivity, and continuous improvement mindset.

(nice to have)

• Experience in data analysis and/or AI applied to images or pattern recognition.

• Knowledge of Python, R, or similar tools

What We Offer

• Competitive salary based on experience and responsibilities.

• Dynamic and innovative environment with real impact in biotechnology and AI applied to microbiology.

• Opportunities for professional growth in a cutting-edge, multidisciplinary team.

• Participation in pioneering projects at the intersection of biology, lab work, and artificial intelligence.
